@Lisabeth DiLalla raised a great question in this post:

RE: Parent-child interaction tasks and Executive Function ...

How are people thinking about restarting in-person data collection? When will it be safe to bring kids and families into the lab (or what can we do to make it safe)?

Has anyone even thought about contacting schools about conducting research studies?

Do people have examples of lab manuals or best practices? It would be great to share resources and ideas here.

    Best,
    -Chuck

We (Karen Adolph, Rick Gilmore, and I along with our research scientists) are drafting a full protocol for in-person data collection that will be ready soon and I'm happy to share as a full document. We have met with various IRB groups to have discussions, and with many lab members. Our protocol includes (1) scripting on what to communicate to parents about our procedure for safety that we will explain during recruitment; (2) a list of the PPE we will use (such as masks, of course, but perhaps as well booties for when we enter homes); (3) distances to maintain from participants; (4) handling of materials for child play (e.g., having toys in ziploc bags for parents to open and hand to children); (5) descriptions of these plans for IRB submissions. We will also gather as much information over the phone as possible (rather than doing in-person longer visits that entail asking demographics, child language data, and so forth), thus tightening the time we are with parents and children.

Chuck, thanks for starting this discussion link.
Catherine, I would love to see your full document. Can you email it to me (Ldilalla@siu.edu)? Thank you!!

We are planning to schedule families a week apart or more so we can tell them that no one has been in the rooms they'll be in for a week, and I am getting a plexiglass shield so that the tester and the child are separated by this, with a window at the bottom to push test items through. Of course, everything will be cleaned between families, and masks will have to be worn if a tester is in the room with the family. We had considered using zoom, but I'd rather not have the parent running the computer while the child is answering, and of course some of our (often rural) families don't have access to computers with good internet, cameras, and mikes.

We'll be following fairly detailed procedures similar to those outlined by Cathy - we're getting extensive guidance on procedures from our individual units here at UCLA. We hope to resume an MRI study with adolescents and the facility has developed very detailed steps to follow. We also will have to add language to the consent form.

The big question for me is will the families come? And will we risk losing them from our longit study if we ask too early? I completely understand any reticence on their part. I don't think we will be trying to begin until August or Sept at the earliest. LA is still in a different situation than other places.

Thanks so much in advance for sending me your protocol, Cathie!

I just bought a plexiglass board to test behind. My biggest concern is whether families will want to come in, too, Andrew. We live in a small, rural area where there are few covid cases, so I think at least some families are already willing to come in. I guess that's good... but I need to protect both them and my students. Still working on it...

    Hi everyone,

Attached are our guidelines for safe data collection and interactions with participants as we re-enter our labs. These guidelines were developed for one of our ongoing projects (Play and Learning Across a Year- PLAY) which involves visits to infant homes across 30 U.S. sites. However, they are generalizable to lab studies as well in some ways. We are submitting these to modify our current IRB approvals moving forward. Of course, this is a work in progress, so we will update as we figure out the new normal.

    Stay well everyone!

We are working on protocols with lots of guidance from UCDavis office or research and IRB.  It will involve PPE, only "distance" testing (eye tracking, looking time, no play tasks), as much questionnaire and form completion at home (using Qualtrics) as possible, spreading out our appointments, and minimizing the people present (e.g., only one parent with the child, no siblings, only one experimenter). But, I'm not sure parents will come, and my research staff is not enthusiastic about resuming testing. We will put procedures in place, but until my students and staff are comfortable, we won't start asking families to come in. And when we do, I don't whether families will volunteer.  Time will tell!

I wonder if anyone has made any progress in getting families to participate over the past month? We finally decided that it was too difficult to ensure 6' distances, etc, during all phases of testing in the lab, and my research staff were very concerned about participating at this time. Therefore, we have been collecting data on 5-year-olds via zoom, and we will rely only on parent questionnaires for all younger children. We had considered filming parents and children playing via zoom, but some families only have phones for such use and we thought it would not be worth their time if we cannot even get good enough film to be able to code behaviors.
