An update from Child Life Journals and Journeys (the child life student journal club): our first official meeting (Thursday, April 30th, 2020; 20:00 CST) went very well! 20 members were able to attend and we had lots of great discussion about the article I posted previously. We used the "
breakouts" feature of Zoom to split into groups of 3-4 to discuss the article in depth for about 30 minutes. We then rejoined the large session to share what we talked about in our groups. You can find some of the points that came up in our discussions below.
- The value of distraction and procedural support
- Melzack and Wall's Gate Control Theory of Pain
- Long-term neurbiological implications of burn dressing changes (with and without the support of child life)
- Issues of reliability and validity
- Parental anxiety transfer
I hope that others can share about their experiences in this forum as well! We would love to hear thoughts/feedback and are always looking to improve!!

Thanks for sharing the information about journal clubs. I wonder if there is a way we might host clubs on Commons. For example, would people be interested in writing up some of the reactions/conversation about the articles? We might even be able to get authors to respond! Something like https://pubpeer.com/ (which calls itself an "onliine journal club").
If other are interested, please respond in this thread. We can think about adding a "journal club community".

Hello all!
My name is Delanie and I am brand new to the SRCD family! I am a child life graduate student currently based in Beijing, China. Something I have done to keep myself busy and research-oriented during this time is start a journal club! It has gotten a lot of positive feedback so far, so I thought I would share. Basically, each month a different member of the group chooses a peer-reviewed, recent, academic journal article for us all to read and then we discuss it over Zoom. Our "test" article was about the value of research in child life and the article for our first official meeting was about pain management. We use GroupMe to communicate and I post all the links in the calendar function of the app. It has been a great way to get people excited about research and is growing faster than I could have possibly imagined (80+ members)! I hope that some of you will consider starting a similar group to share and discuss research as well if you are the type of person that needs a project, or are just feeling a little research-deprived being away from your lab or other endeavors right now. I would love to hear your thoughts if you are in a similar group, are thinking of starting one, have past experience in this area, or just have thoughts to share!
