Thanks for the tip about consolidated digest. The site has been working well for me so far. The only "issue" I've encountered is that it's sometimes hard to get where I want to go. I sometimes get stuck in loops that send me back to the main community page rather than the page I was trying to reach (e.g., to reply to a message). I think this usually happens when I'm prompted to answer a question about my profile/preferences, so hopefully it goes away on its own as I continue to set up my profile.

One problem I had was that I was getting too many emails. In your profile under My Account > Community Notifications you can set up a consolidated digest-- that is one email with activity from all your communities.
See "Notification settings" -- You want to automatically set community discussion emails to "No Email" when a community is added to a consolidated digest (or you get both the community and the consolidated messages). You can also do this community by community using the dropdowns.
