    Dear All,

Hello and glad to join this forum. I'm a professor of Cognitive Science in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT. My research focuses on early learning broadly, including social cognition and causal reasoning, but I've been especially interested in trying to bridge the gap between learning and play. I joined to see if we might be able to create some shared online resources for parents currently housebound with children across the age span. I'm just learning to navigate this site but hoping we can create a community to develop this shortly.

    Hi everyone,

I am an Associate Professor in Human Development and Family Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I study cognitive development in infancy and early childhood, particularly in the context of screen/digital media. Most of my research focuses on the extent to which young children learn from different sources of information (real-life demonstrations, videos, apps, etc.) and factors that moderate learning. I also study the impact of background television on toy play and social interactions.

I am interested in online instruction. I teach a large, online child development course (conception through middle childhood, enrollment ~250). I also teach research experience courses and seminars on digital media and cognitive development.

I look forward to connecting on Commons!

Hello to the Brave New World!
My name is Aaron Richmond, I am a Professor of Human Development and Educational Psychology at Metropolitan State University of Denver in the Department of Psychological Sciences.

With over a decade of professional teaching experience, I have taught over a dozen different psychology, human development, and education courses. I approach teaching by focusing on model teaching skills, such as building rapport with students, engaging students, being caring, respectful, and prepared, and by using student-centered and active learning instruction. In all of of my classes, I specifically attempt to move beyond rote memory of course material, rather focuses on building higher-level thinking skills that students can then apply to solve real-world problems. As a result of my approach and dedication to teaching, I have garnered several awards for excellence in teaching and mentoring. These include student-lead awards such as the Psi Chi Excellence in Teaching Award, regional mentorship awards such as the Psi Chi International Regional Faculty Advisor Award for the Rocky Mountain Region to national teaching awards such as the Society for Teaching of Psychology Jane S. Halonen Award for Excellence in Teaching.

In my research, I have explored effective pedagogical approaches to instruction in both k-12 and higher education. Specifically, I investigate the development of cognitive and elaborative processes, model teaching competencies, the efficacy of instructional strategies, and various other topics in the scholarship of teaching and learning. Furthermore, as evident by publishing and presenting research with over 25 undergraduate and graduate students, I strongly believe in mentoring students through the research process in hopes to help shape future leaders in psychology and SoTL research.

In the end, I have dedicated my academic career to studying the improvement of classroom practices and learning.

    Hello SRCD community!

My name is Candice Mills, and I am an Associate Professor in Psychological Sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas. My research program focuses on children's learning from others. I am interested in the process of inquiry: how children evaluate their own knowledge, how they use their assessments of their knowledge to guide their search for additional information, how they determine a source for their questions, and how they make sense of the information they receive. I've been an SRCD member since grad school in the early 2000s.

Thank you! I'm actually working with a colleague right now to write an op-ed on this very topic. I think it's interesting to see how quickly the public discourse has shifted from a risk- to a strengths-focused view of youth social media use. Things like Facetime, Instagram, and TikTok have suddenly become (more) critical tools for keeping teens connected and engaged in the absence of school-based interactions.

I'm also looking forward to learning from others on this forum about potential strategies for engaging adolescents with research right now (especially for those of us who have traditionally relied on school-based methods). It seems a number of tools are popping up for online studies with younger children/parents--I'd have to imagine there are also opportunities for getting teens engaged.

    Hi Everyone,

I'm Jen and I'm a professor of psychology at California State University, Monterey Bay. I've been a member of SRCD on and off since 1995. I would have liked to have consistently been a member but sometimes my professional development monies just didn't go far enough to cover conference travel and annual memberships. Anyway, right now I'm shifting from campus governance back to a full load of teaching. And wow, it's such a challenge. I think every campus administrator should teach a course at least once every couple of years so they can remember what hard work it is. I know I had started to lose touch with teaching when I was chair of the psychology department. But now I'm back! And I'm feeling the pain. It's good though and helps me keep perspective on what it feels like to do something new. I'm teaching introductory psychology and I'm teaching a capstone course for seniors where I guide them to complete a research project or literature review for their final major requirement before graduation.

My research program is very eclectic and I focus on projects where I can engage large groups of undergraduates; we have many majors and few faculty. Recently my students and I did a project where they went into kindergarten classrooms and conducted an assessment in Spanish and English in order for us to address the very high percentage of children in our county who are evidently considered "not ready" for kindergarten. Our findings did not align with the official data that had been collected by others. We've discovered that "kindergarten readiness" is a very complex concept and we're unpacking what it means for children, their families, our local schools, and our local community.

I hope everyone is hanging in there at this time. I worry that so many folks are working so hard to be there for their students that they're not taking adequate care of themselves...

    Hi all,

I'm currently a Research Scientist at the Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences at the University of Washington, and I will start as an Assistant Professor in the College of Education at the University of Houston this fall. I've been a member of SRCD since grad school in 2006.

My research interests include social cognitive development, motivation, stereotyping, and STEM education. I have an ongoing longitudinal study (currently at 1.5 years out of 3) about children and adolescents' beliefs about technology (with a focus on gender and stereotypes); it will be interesting to see whether the current increase in distance learning has an effect on children's attitudes about technology.

Nice to see you here. Congratulations on the new position! What's it like thinking about moving institutions in the current environment? I imagine there are many folks in your same position.  Great question about kids' attitudes about technology and distance learning. I wonder how participating in online instruction is changing gendered attitudes about school?

    Hi Chuck,

Thank you! Moving institutions/positions is stressful, but the pandemic has definitely given me a new perspective. Before, I was "worried" about whether I'd get an office with a window; now I'm just hoping that I get to meet my new colleagues in person this fall. I also consider myself very lucky that I signed my contract 6 weeks before the temporary hiring freeze. It must be extremely stressful for grad students/postdocs who were planning to go on the job market this fall.

Maybe one of the silver linings of home instruction is that more students will start learning to code. I've heard from a company that has a coding app for young children that they're already seeing more demand for their games. I think positive early experiences with coding for more children will help to reduce gender stereotypes and get more girls interested in STEM.

    Allison

    Hello everyone!

My name Rosie Drysdale. In September 2019 I joined the Lab of Action and Body at Royal Holloway, University of London, where I started my PhD, supervised by Prof. Manos Tsakiris. My previous research as an undergraduate student at University of Birmingham focused on how multisensory integration of visual-tactile events in the first months of life might underpin social affective processes such as empathy. I used electroencephalography (EEG) in this research project and I am keen to employ other neuroscientific techniques in the future, such as fNIRS.
I am interested in the role of the bodily self in understanding infants' developing self- and other- awareness. I am excited to pursue this challenge during my PhD, where I will carry out a longitudinal study investigating the development of interoceptive (cardiac) and exteroceptive (visual-tactile) body perception in relation to an emerging sense of self, across the first 3 years of life. I will also examine infants' and their mothers' perception of each others' bodies across these sensory domains. The project will involve physiological (ECG) and behavioural (eye tracking and microcoding behaviours) measures, as well as a combination of the two, when investigating bio-behavioural synchrony.

Unfortunately, I was ready to invite families to the Baby Lab to participate in my study right before things took a huge turn and we went into lockdown. Given the nature of my project and its measures, there is no way for me to transfer my study online. I am focusing on review paper planning and thesis writing and learning coding packages, as well as wondering how I may be able to work on the project from afar.

I am new to SRCD and looking forward to being a part of this community to connect with, and learn from the developmental science community! Any advice or useful resources for writing reviews would be very much welcomed! Stay safe and healthy.
    -Rosie

Could you say a little more about the strategies you are using to compensate (maybe in the Research Continuity community)? Any thoughts about the way institutions (including SRCD) can support researchers in your position?

    Hey Chuck,

Thank you for asking about the journal club! I think it would be awesome if other people are looking to start one. We're pretty low-tech. For right now, we use GroupMe to communicate and Zoom to have our discussions. I post all relevant links (article, call, sign-up sheet) in the GroupMe calendar and we discuss one article each month. We are growing pretty fast though (80+ members) so if we out-grow GroupMe, switching to another platform will be considered. We are also working on getting some supplemental resources (guest speakers, quick fact sheets) to go with the articles since not everybody is as keen on reading lengthy papers as I am. I will peruse the Research Continuity community now!

    Hi all,

My name is Bryn - I'm a PhD Candidate at Boston College studying Applied Developmental and Educational Psychology. My research considers how contextual factors inhibit and support wellbeing, with particular attention to socioeconomic resources and community-based resources and stressors. I love quantitative methods and have entered the world of ArcGIS work, which I hope to grow my knowledge of. I also have an interested in qualitative work and mixed methods, and have done some participatory work. Audiobooks, the outdoors, justice-related organizing work, and animals are a few of the things that give me life!

Along the lines of justice-related organizing, our program is in the process of developing policies and practices to ensure equity in our graduate training. I am on a task-force focused on equitable mentorship, and am hoping to engage with other folks in the SRCD community around this issue.

I have been a member of SRCD for several years but am a first-time participant in the commons. Looking forward to engaging with you all!

    Hi Bryn,
Welcome to Commons. And thanks for posting the question about graduate mentoring resources. I wonder if you have any thoughts about how graduate mentors/programs could respond to the Coronavirus? This is going to impact people differently: What sorts of equity concerns should we be looking out for?

    Hi everyone,

My name is Yana Kuchirko. I'm an assistant professor of psychology at Brooklyn College, City University of New York. In my work, I examine sociocultural and ecological contexts of child development. Specifically, I focus on how children's early experiences in their everyday settings (home, neighborhood, school) vary by ethnicity/race/ culture, socioeconomic status, and gender, and relate to later educational outcomes. Through a strengths-based perspective on research, I seek to challenge dominant, deficit-oriented narratives about ethnic-racial minority children's development.

I look forward to learning about everyone and participating in this wonderful community!

    Hi Yana,
Welcome to SRCD Commons. Your research sounds incredibly timely. Do you have any thoughts about how different communities are responding to online-learning/school-closure? I expect this new context could reveal/support new kinds of strengths.

Hi! I'm Michelann Quimby. I am an Assistant Professor of Instruction (fancy name for full-time Lecturer) at the University of Texas in the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences. I teach a lot of classes on the sociology and psychology of the family, and my research is in cyberpsychology (human behavior on the internet). I work with a group on campus that advocates for Trauma-Informed Pedagogy and am working on a grant to develop a training website for it. I'm also going to be on the Advisory Board for Disability in the fall at the university level, so that is a cool intersection. My research and teaching are informed by TIP, Intersectionality, and Critical Pedagogy. Nice to be here!

Hi Michelann. Thanks for posting. How are things going for fancy-named full-time Lecturers?  Your work seems really critical, especially with the move to online instruction. I just made a similar comment to @Yana Kuchirko.  I would love to hear more about how kids with different ability profiles are responding to the Covid-19 disruptions.

Thanks for your reply! My move to emergency online instruction was fairly smooth, and I was teaching three courses in the spring. Now I'm teaching two 5 day a week summer courses back to back - not as smooth. Students don't' want daily Zoom meetings so that necessitates a flipped classroom. One of my summer courses had a grant to work with a fancy AV studio in another college at my university. They do really cool work, but I have to simultaneously think one, two, and three weeks out because of the shooting and production schedule.

I think this format works better for students of multiple abilities but it is harder for able students who are used to classroom instruction. I also think it's easier for instructors to actively consider differently-abled students when we have to pre-prepare our lectures. With the AV studio, I get great, searchable transcripts of my video lecture. Without, I get the iffy zoom transcripts. With mental health disabilities, it's hard to say. Some students need routine and the classroom helps with that. Others I think do better in a more self-guided environment. I had to make a lot of accommodations last semester for late work, but that was expected given the disruption and stress of the pandemic. Those are my current thoughts! I'm teaching a full load in the fall and it is still unclear how that will work. I'm hoping for a blended format.

    Hi Stephen,
Welcome to SRCD Commons. Great to see you hear. I wonder if you have seen the threads on studying the impact of the Covid-19 crisis on kids? Seems like your work on trauma and grief would be very relevant. Have you seen effects of Covid on the adolescents you work with?

Impact of Covid on Children and Adolescents
With schools closed and reopening not known, kids and adolescents are becoming more anxious. Here national exams are usually done from October with those who succeed joining university the following year. Those from primary school also join high school early the following year. Most kids and adolescents fear for disruption in their earlier set goals of progressing to the next stage in their education cycle. As the debate for reopening of schools continue, others are fearing for possible infection that might accompany that. A new worrying trend since schools closed is the rise in teenage pregnancy. https://www.africanews.com/2020/06/17/close-to-4000-school-girls-impregnated-in-kenya-during-covid-19-lockdown//  This statistics are from a single county of the 47 counties in Kenya. As other counties continue releasing their statistics it could be more shocking. With mental health not given priority it deserves by government interventions to Covid 19, we see a looming mental health catastrophe. For instance schools do not have psychologists or counselors to address mental health issues among kids and adolescents. It is teachers who are usually expected to respond to mental health challenges of their learners as part of their teaching work yet they are not trained in psychology.

    HI Yall,

It's nice to be here with everyone. My name is Alaina Brenick and I'm an Associate Professor of Human Development and Family Sciences at the University of Connecticut, For the past 2 decades my research has examined individual, micro-, and macro-level factors that contribute to intergroup conflict, as well as the conditions necessary for reducing prejudice, discrimination, and victimization across development. Specifically, I analyze how diverse groups of youth in the U.S. and in other regions of the world-sometimes with vastly different societal structures, norms, and expectations-experience, reason about, and respond to intergroup peer relations and group-based victimization (e.g., discriminatory bullying or exclusion). My work provides a fundamental knowledge base for creating contextually and developmentally appropriate intervention programs, designed to promote social equity and positive intergroup relations. Before the world started shifting into the pandemic and reinvigorated BLM and social justice movements (YES!) I was moving toward looking at the point at which youth ACT...I've found that reducing prejudice is not the same as including an outgroup member, and that's not the same as stepping in when victimization of an outgroup member takes place or policies oppress marginalized outgroups but favor your ingroup, etc. So, I've been interested at the tipping point to action.

Additionally, I have studies with interventions in Germany and in the MId-East, studies looking as resilience in refugees in Jordan, and much much more.

    Nice to meet y'all!

I am Christy Buchanan.  I am a Professor of Psychology at Wake Forest University. My research focuses on adolescence and emerging adulthood, and has addressed how characteristics of the family (e.g., family structure, family relationships, parenting practices, ethnicity, culture) and of the individual (e.g., beliefs about development, biological change) are associated with one another and with adjustment during this time of life.  I have a special interest in predictors of parenting and parent-child relationships during adolescence.

I teach courses in life-span developmental psychology (grad and undergrad), parent-child relationships, and adolescent development.  I am also in the process of resurrecting and expanding a course I last taught in 1998 on child development and social policy.  I am looking for good up to date materials for that course, in addition to the wonderful briefs and social policy reports SRCD has (and have posted about this in the Teaching Community).

I teach at Bronx Community College, part of the City University of New York. My students aspire to be teachers, social workers, counselors, nurses, police officers and -- some of them -- to become Ph.D. professors. That is not impossible, one of my former students earned a Ph.D. and now is tenured in my department. Most of my students are eager learners, most know very little about developmental science, and thus are a joy to teach. I also am the author of the best-selling college textbooks in developmental psychology, so I am always eager to learn more about our field. More joy! Kathleen Stassen Berger
